"It takes one to pierce the darkest cave"

Yoga was never designed for mental health. Nor was it designed for stretching the hamstrings and toning the core. However, the practices that were set out by these wise and connected beings of old, have some remarkable effects on the mind.

I was diagnosed with temporal lobe epilepsy and clinical depression in my teens and spent twenty years on medication. Having reached an absolute dead end and feeling entirely hopeless, I turned to a local meditation course as a last-ditch effort to avoid hospitalization. Six months after that first ever meditation, I was able to come off all my medication. Yoga has provided me with the tools to maintain space between my sense of self and my somewhat dysfunctional mind.  It has empowered me to revel in true joy and move without resistance into sadness.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not ‘cured’. I still get depressed. I still have anxiety. But the more I practice, the more peace I find no matter what my state of mind is. It’s not easy, but it’s worth it for the aliveness you will feel!
